Garden #8, Menlo Park

Showcase Features: Discovering this gem of a garden on a small street in Menlo Park is a wonderful surprise. Fairly large mounds were installed by the owner, and completely transformed the whole property. The owner's goal were low maintenance and water savings and he found the front garden transformation a doable project - with help from designer Annaloy Nickum. The mounds include low-growing manzanita, St. Catherine's lace buckwheat, bunch grasses, salvias, California fuchsia, ceanothus, and asters in the sunny areas. In part-sun, rosy buckwheat, a red monkey flower, and island snapdragon are attractive color accents.

Other Garden Attractions: Small solar lamps light the path to the front door at night. An attractive bird bath has visitors year round.

Gardening for Wildlife: Finches enjoy feeding on bugs around the purple sage and pink flowering currents. California fuchsia, salvia, and penstemons are the hummingbirds favorites. The flannel bush and California wild lilac attract big black bumble bees in spring.
