Growing Natives Garden Tour 2013
Carved Redwood Art Garden (5 photos)
Garden #41, San Jose
Showcase Features: This one-of-a- kind garden shows how to give native plants the drainage they require to thrive. Faced with heavy, rocky clay, the homeowners used judicious grading and placement of boulders to create microclimates and optimize drainage. Curving paths and mounds invite the visitor to wander and discover the owner's art displayed in charming vignettes throughout the garden. Large shrubs include Dr. Hurd Manzanita, coffeeberry, ceanothus and native currants.
Other Garden Attractions: A redwood removed from a neighbor's yard was re-used to make steps, retaining walls and hand-carved artworks. More redwood was combined with old barrel staves to create a bridge over a dry creek bed.
Gardening for Wildlife: Manzanitas, currants and coffee berry provide food for birds. Buckwheats, yarrow, iris, ceanothus and lupines provide habitat for bees and butterflies.
☺ Garden Talk: Using salvaged and repurposed wood to design gardens.
