Growing Natives Garden Tour 2014

Jensen's Cottage Garden (6 photos from 2013)

Garden #43, San Jose

Showcase Features: A good example of what one can do with a smallish space. This calm front yard replicates a coastal vibe, with its natural gravel path meandering between low growing 'Ken Taylor' Manzanita, Bee's Bliss Sage, Monkeyflower, Columbine (Aquilegia), California Sagebrush (Artemesia), Coyote Mint (Mondardella), Salvia mellifera and Dwarf Coyote Bush (Baccharis). A small sweep of Dune Sedge (Carex pansa) flows through the yard and architectual accents of Deer Grass (Muhlenbergia) punctuate the rhythm of the lower plants. As it grows in, a now small California Horse Chestnut (Aesculus)will be a focal point. Poppies and other wildflowers fill in wherever they can find a foothold (they do love gravel!).

Other Garden Attractions: This garden illustrates how simple steps can improve the health of our watersheds. The garden is full of watershed-friendly design features, including permeable hardscaping, concrete removal and reuse, disconnected downspouts, and lawn removal.
