Growing Natives Garden Tour 2015
Lizards' Lair (4 photos)
Garden #35, San Jose
Showcase Features: This yard is a beautiful example of a homeowner designed, installed and maintained garden. The three year old plantings replaced a standard lawn with an attractive combination of native shrubs, grasses, perennials and some annuals. The garden was created to be interesting in multiple seasons while saving water and attracting wildlife.
Other Garden Attractions: Mounds were added to provide better drainage for plants as well as drama. A dry stream bed was installed, anchored by a recirculating fountain. A manzanita and a coyote brush pruned to display its branching pattern balance the dry creek bed. The parking strip also features native plants:
Gardening for Wildlife: In contrast to the previous lawn, the new garden, with many plants that provide food and shelter as well as a water source, birds, bees and lizards seem to enjoy spending time in the garden.
