Growing Natives Garden Tour 2011
Mossbrook Garden (4 photos)
Garden #41, San Jose
Showcase Features: In the parking strip, a young oak, ground cover sages, and toyon offer a welcome alternative to the parking strip of weeds or gravel commonly found. The sunny front garden shows off variegated Ceanothus 'Diamond Heights' and a holly-leaf cherry hedge. A large group of island alum root and a pink-flowered hybrid coral bells welcome visitors and hummingbirds alike, while native Iris under the birch tree offer a welcome splash of color in the spring.
Other Garden Attractions: The more shady back garden features a covered deck, an attractive retaining wall, and plantings from the redwood community, enhanced by large rocks. Look for wild ginger, evergreen huckleberry, Douglas iris, yerba buena, wild strawberry ground cover, giant western chain fern and coffeeberry.
Gardening for Wildlife: The owners planted berry bushes for birds and are looking forward to the many visitors sure to come.
