Growing Natives Garden Tour 2013
Salem Avenue Garden (6 photos)
Garden #31, Cupertino
Showcase Features: This garden evokes sunny chaparral in the front and redwood woodland in the back. Beautiful mature manzanitas and ceanothus among serpentine boulders are focal points of the front garden. An artful combination of grasses, low manzanitas and fragaria tumble over rocks. A grapevine frames the garage. Espaliered ribes and cercocarpus display their branching patterns against house walls and fences. In contrast, the backyard, shaded by neighboring redwoods, is a serene woodland retreat, accented by the sound of water flowing over rocks into a tiny pool. The duff from the redwoods mulches a number of shade-loving shrubs, including western azalea, native currants, myrica and wild rose. Redwood sorrel, symphoricarpus and Pacific iris are planted among the shrubs. A small patio provides seating to enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
