Growing Natives Garden Tour 2012

Menlo Park Habitat Garden (9 photos)

Garden #5, Menlo Park

Showcase Features: Wildlife habitat is the theme of this garden, where the front yard was designed by the homeowner, and the back yard by a landscape professional. A large variety of natives can be found here from wildflowers to trees, flat areas to mounds.

The designer will be on site during the tour.

Other Garden Attractions: A spacious grassland meadow with a different variety of grasses and sedges, accented by a Ceanothus thyrsiflorus 'Snow Flurry', is the center of the back yard. A meandering step stone path encircles the meadow and provides access to and a way to explore the outskirts of the back yard, offering more native treasures as well as edible and potted plants. Two of the rain gutters have been diverted into a seasonal pond--a depression filled with pebbles and rocks.

Gardening for Wildlife: This is a habitat garden, offering food, shelter, water and places to raise young. Many species of birds and insects, as well as newts and squirrels enjoy the landscape.
