Growing Natives Garden Tour 2017

County of Santa Clara & UCCE Master Gardeners Waterwise Teaching & Demo Garden (11 photos from 2016)

Garden #42, San Jose

While this garden is open all year round, visiting it during the tour day provides an opportunity to ask the docents about any particularly interesting plants or features.

Address: 1553 Berger Drive, San Jose (click the address to show it on a map).

Directions: From Hwy 101, take the Oakland Rd. exit north. Go on Oakland Rd for about 0.7 mile, then turn left onto Berger Drive. The destination is near Building 1 of the Santa Clara County Government Offices.

Showcase Features: The Berger Water-wise Demo garden was created in Fall 2013, based on a design by Master Gardener Rebecca Schoenenberger. The garden provides a good example of what area homeowners and business might consider when replacing a lawn with drought-tolerant plants. While the garden consists primarily of California natives, there are a number of other drought-tolerant plants from areas around the world that share our Mediterranean climate. Now that the garden installation phase has been completed, Master Gardeners will soon begin offering seasonal, hands-on workshops on native plant pruning, long-term native garden care, drip irrigation, and sheet mulching.

Other Garden Attractions:

Garden Talk: 11 AM and 1:30 PM: "California Native Arboretum Allstars" - a talk by Rebecca Schoenenberger.

Plants Available: California Nativescapes will be holding a plant sale on Saturday, Apr 22nd. They will have plants available that are in the Berger Dr. garden among others. A percentage of the proceeds go toward supporting the GNGT. Cash and Checks accepted.
