Growing Natives Garden Tour 2017

Frontyard Campbell/Willow Glen (12 photos)

Garden #65, San Jose

Showcase Features: This front yard garden offers an attractive and imaginative alternative to the turf landscapes of this neighborhood. Professionally designed, this garden has been installed and maintained by the homeowners. The old lawn was sheet mulched to create the new garden beds. Two legacy non-native trees are well-integrated with a native plant landscape of low growing perennials and groundcovers. A dry creek on one side is flanked by bunchgrasses, blue-eyed grass, iris, yarrow, and yerba buena. A flagstone path invites the visitor into the other side of the garden among the sage, epilobium, and goldenaster. A birdbath creates a focal point for observation from a well-positioned bench on the porch.

Other Garden Attractions: In its second year, the garden demonstrates that even a young native plant garden can appear filled in. The garden was hand watered every 10 days through its first summer. Mulch and hand pulling are used effectively for weed control.

Gardening for Wildlife: A birdbath at the tree dripline attracts a variety of songbirds. Seed pods are left on plants to provide food wildlife through fall.
